About Us
When five couples met with Bro. Charles Gentry in the home of Eugene and Ina Slade on Monday night, October 23, 1978, they began what is now known as Wynndale Baptist Church.
Prior to that time, some people in the Lebanon / Pine Grove / Wynndale / Springridge Road area had expressed a desire and need for a Southern Baptist church.
Eugene had already talked with Rev. Fred Tarpley, Director of Missions for the Hinds-Madison Baptist Association, who suggested that Bro. Gentry be contacted for guidance in helping to investigate the possibility of starting a mission church.
After much prayer and thought that night, it was decided to hold services the following Sunday in the home of Richard and Marjorie White on Springridge Road.
The first Sunday School and church services were held October 29, 1978, in the White's garage. Eugene made a temporary pulpit. Chairs and hymnbooks were borrowed. Twenty-eight people attended.
The mission church met there until March 11, 1979. By that time, they had acquired 13.5 acres of land on Springridge Road. A portable chapel was loaned to the mission church by the Mississippi Baptist Convention.
On March 16, 1980, the mission church became Wynndale Baptist Church. The church grew in numbers and in spirit. In 1983, the church observed its "First Five Years." In 1988, the church's 10th anniversary was observed, "A Decade of Service."
A multipurpose building was built in 1980. A youth building was built in 1986.
The best was yet to come! The church voted in February of 1989 to approve plans for a new auditorium. A drive was launched to pay off the existing debt on the Youth Building, then began a bond program in June to finance the new building. Groundbreaking for the new auditorium was held on July 23, 1989. We proudly dedicated our finished auditorium on March 4, 1990.
Growing spiritual needs and a growing congregation prompted us to call Brother Gentry as full time pastor beginning September 1, 1989. Since that time we have added new nurseries, formed new Sunday School classes, employed a Church Secretary, upgraded technologies, enlarged the Church Media Library, purchased other church vehicles, bought two mobile trailers to accommodate our growing Sunday School. The years have been fast and fabulous! PRAISE GOD! May He ever guide us and may our faith increase.
BAPTISTRY
A symbolic design was installed in the baptistry in the spring of 1993. It portrays the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.
The background wall represents the rock tomb. The walnut wood cross represents the crucifixion, and the stained glass dove hovering over the baptismal pool represents Christ approved by God at his baptism. The clear circles represent the never-ending love of God for His children.
The unique and one-of-a-kind baptistery tableau was designed and created by artist Bob Dunaway of Clinton.
